Dirty Disco Edition

We have an overwhelmingly girl-centric focus around Atticus. It's not intentional, we just write what we know. So for our summer lookbook, we shifted direction to guys for a change, more specifically our newest handsome models, musical wunderkinds du jour, Dirty Disco Kidz. When not single-handedly reviving the classic creeper 'stache, Ric, Chris and Vinnie mix, produce and perform at packed to capacity, dance your pants off parties. They graciously allowed us to dress and style them to our hearts content; we figured, who better to lounge around looking effortlessly cool in Simon Miller, Trovota and Relwen while sipping Veuve Cliquot?

What did we learn from the shoot? Hamptons polo match is not poor Ric's favorite look, posing with gorgeous but very underage models is easier with a little Jay-Z and fashionably late equals about two and half hours, give or take.

Notes On: Paying it Forward

Inspired by a few random acts of kindness, I decided to offer a fortuitous treat to you, loyal readers. The concept of a "pay it forward" campaign has always made me smile. I once pulled up to the Starbucks drive-thru to find out the kind stranger in the car ahead of me had already paid for my triple grande nonfat cappuccino. I'll never know who decided they could spare an extra $4.18 to brighten my day, but I often think about how unexpectedly happy I was. I actually think I was supposed to continue the kindness by doing the same thing for the car behind me, but I was just too shocked to do anything except drive away in amazement! (editor's note: I promise I paid for the car behind me on my next trip!)

This morning Summit Credit Union came to me with a similar campaign and left a ten dollar bill hidden in one of the Atticus fitting rooms with a message for the lucky finder to use it to help someone else. Moments later, a gust of wind knocked over a recycle bin on the curb in front of the shop and hundreds of papers started blowing all over the sidewalk. Stephani and I immediately ran out to help pick up the sudden mess, and within seconds we were joined by about 15 passersby who stopped to help. At the risk of sounding super cheesy, I have to tell you that I actually felt like my heart was swelling at the thought of so many people taking five minutes of their time to help clean up our street. So, setting aside the cynical humor you surely have become accustomed to as a reader of our blog, I want to remind you that sometimes it's nice to give a random gift, or to help a fragile model if she happens to fall on the Prada runway.

On the way to work this morning, I let my feelings about how I looked be known with the comment,"I might as well die...I hate my outfit." That may have been a little dramatic, but I really just didn't feel good about my staple Nicole Richie go-to outfit today.

The minute I got to work, I ransacked the racks and tried on all of my current Atticus favorites (Relwen men's shirts, Charlotte Ronson dresses and Filippa K Tanks) and the winner was the Loomstate La Paloma Jumper.

Even though I told myself I was going to stop shopping, it's impossible to feel guilty about this outfit. It looks so good, in fact, that I didn't even have to justify the purchase to Kristin (who already told me she'll be borrowing it...a lot).

Since Madison has finally reached the 75 degree mark today, I allowed myself to break out my summer clothes. Rest in peace beloved Madewell necklace. It died an honorable death this weekend, and after trying fruitlessly to revive the sad tangle of chains, I opted instead to take this opportunity to amp up my collection. I've never really been an accessories kind of girl until I began spending time with some eminently inclined friends. One expertly piles on bracelets a la Kate Lanphear and the other's collection of colorful, eclectic bangles never escapes my jealous stare.

On the bracelet front, I'm partial to Jessica Kagan Cushman, (see my favorite here) but for those not akin to wearing their hobbies on their (literal) sleeve, rings are an equally statement making route. Outrageously over sized, double knuckled or anything extravagant will do. House of Harlow corners the market on affordable costume pieces, but if you're looking for something a bit more haute, Giles and Brother's handcrafted charmers are nothing short of mini masterpieces.

The life of an insomniac is not an easy one. I rarely fall asleep without a pharmaceutical cocktail and even then, most nights I'm still wide awake staring at the ceiling come 3 a.m. Even though I have 300+ channels at my disposal, somehow I always end up at the same place, Three's Company. The rosy hues, outlandish 70's fonts and cheese factor are my version of warm milk and a bedtime story; a few episodes and I'm counting sheep in no time.

Last night however, something caught my eye and I sat up with rapt attention. "Oh my god," I said aloud to no one. "I'm totally digging Chrissy's style!" Her blend of playful rompers, teeny-tiny short shorts and striking mix of colors and textures spoke to me. One commercial break later and I was furiously taking notes, planning how I'll be biting her style this summer. Here are a few looks I decided on:

Wide leg, high-waist pants with slouchy tucked in tees, or cropped tops and vests
Obscenely short shorts paired with wedges and socks
Jumpers and one piece play suits
And of course, there's room in any wardrobe for a little glitz, even if happens to be in a dream sequence

Deep Thoughts: Free from Baggage

Aiming for a happy medium between these two

I'm a classic over-packer. "What? Four pairs of shoes for 24 hours in Chicago is unreasonable?!"

I always begin with sparse intentions, carefully planning outfits and accessories but end up throwing in half my closet at the last minute, "just in case." Faced with the daunting task of packing for a 9 day excursion to Morocco is extremely challenging in itself, but I'm also limiting myself to one (!) piece of checked luggage, so this time I'm determined to tote along only the bare necessities.

My initial instincts to channel Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca were regrettably, but quickly discarded, because as much as I'd love to don fedoras, khaki trench coats and elegant two piece suits, these don't exactly scream low maintenance, nor do they save room in my suitcase. Also considering Morocco is an Arab influenced nation means I've got to go a little more, ahem, conservative than I normally do, while still managing to be (and look like) myself.

Dreary weather may create somber moods, but I love it. There's nothing better than cozying up in bed, listening to thunder and rain, or in my case, letting Lorrie Moore and the melodic tapping of my ancient G4 lull me to sleep during the first spring storm. Maneuvering treacherous elements in style requires a bit more finesse, but you needn't let cloudy skies keep you from looking bright.

Investing in rainy weather gear is a must for any urban dweller (or pseudo urban dwellers who rarely venture beyond their 10 block concrete playgrounds). Fashion forward rubber boots, candy-colored slickers and delightfully fun umbrellas keep you from focusing on how miserable it is if forced to venture beyond your bed. I absolutely hate out of season weather. Not because of the sunshine, people finally going outside or the drum player serenading me outside of the store. I hate it because my instincts tell me not to dress in clothes that don't involve five different layers, Uggs and jeans. However, I refuse to look the part of a junior high girl with my shorty shorts, flip flops, tank top and pasty white skin on the first day of April in Wisconsin. Notes On: Pants

Though most of the comments I make regarding my distain for wearing pants are facetious, I really have taken somewhat of a hiatus from wearing the garment. The pieces that I once couldn't get through the week without wearing (Current/Elliott bf jeans, Acne skinnies and my old Gap camouflage cargos) were collecting dust on the top-most shelf of my closet while I rocked leggings, skirts and dresses for the duration of the dark season. Then came the fall runway shows, and suddenly it appeared the fashion world was once again obsessed with pants. Fixated on pleated trousers from Ann Demuelemeester, leather crop pants at Isabel Marant and velvet at Alexander Wang (which I'm sure I'll come to love by the time they hit the retail floor), I was inspired to pull down my old faves and create some updated looks. In anticipation of what I'm predicting to be the summer of many things including pants, I am offering you a list of the looks I plan to wear in heavy rotation:

Deep Thoughts: Evolution Take 2

I've never been so happy to see a week come to an end. I suffered a particularly brutal string of poor life choices involving 'drinking off' the wooziness of 5 immunizations for an upcoming trip to Morocco, hosting a ridiculously unnecessary Tuesday night after-bar and breaking up (almost creepily verbatim as 5 years earlier on 13th and 1st) with someone I wasn't even dating. Add this to a paralyzing bout of writer's block, usually my one saving grace, and it goes without saying, my moods have seen sunnier days.

However, keeping in mind the words of a wise-beyond-his-years friend, "Bekah, there are countries that can't even cure polio. Your life is far from difficult," I'm determined not to let any of it get me down. Considering I actually received a polio shot this week (who knew they still gave those out?!), it's easy to put things into perspective. I've busied myself planning an upcoming photo shoot (more details soon!) and changed my disposition to downright cheerful, day dreaming of the countless spring outfits I'm dying to debut.

Topping my list is a LaRok silk playsuit, an ancient Grey Ant dress I'm modifying into a shirt (thanks to the talents of a genius tailor) and either some new rag & bone or Alice by Temperly lovelies. I haven't quite decided yet.

Trend Spotting: Mixed Prints

"Ooooh, I'm so excited to wear it, I just don't have enough prints yet!" I nodded excitedly at a friend's recent sentiment during a lengthy spring trends discussion. As someone whose closet is approximately 98% black (with heather grey when I'm feeling really crazy!), mixed prints reign supreme as my must haves for the coming months.

Designers delved deeper than conventional florals for spring 2010, infusing high-impact patterns and hues. Bursts of colors and textures at Balenciaga, leopard-prints merged with whimsical blossoms at DVF and the oft referenced futuristic tie-die at Proenza reinforced that this spring, there's no such thing as too much of a good thing.

Nailing this playful look is as simple as taking cues from the kindergarten set. Polka dots with florals, tribal patterns with plaids, stripes and above all color, color, color! For those not fortunate enough to have a 5 year old on hand or for most of us who rarely stray from black, prints and patterns in similar variations or colors paired with neutral elements won't overwhelm.

Inspired By: Garance's Basics

Garance's top 10 basics list got us giddy with excitement. The chance to combine two of our favorite things: fashion AND making lists? Kristin and I could barely write fast enough, attacking this task with an almost disturbing intensity. Here's our version:

Kristin's 10 Basics

1. Leggings. Black. Full length. My favorite are the Kova&T Pepper Leggings.
2. A flat riding boot. I prefer black. I've had a pair from Banana Republic made from insanely beautiful leather for five years. I've never found any that I like more, so I just keep getting them re-soled.
3. A very long scarf. It's extremely versatile and a good place to throw in some color.
4. A dark skinny jean. I think the best leg opening is either 10" or 12" with at least an 8" rise for comfort. My favorites are the Acne Hex in DC.
5. V-neck t-shirts in black, heather grey and white. Nothing compares to T by Alexander Wang.
6. Blazer. I still rock a black one I got at Gap in college. It's timeless, and easy to throw over any look.
7. A black skinny belt. Looks good with pants, dresses or tunics.
8. A medium size handbag that can take you from day to night. Made from good leather and doesn't have much branding or hardware. My favorite leather bags are from leather markets in Italy. I love when everyone tries to guess what designer it is, and the reality is that I bought it from an old man on the street who made it himself. Ashley Watson is a close second with her bags made from recycled leather jackets.
9. A cozy sweater. I have a honeycomb knit tunic from Temperley that I wear at least 3 times a week in the winter.
10. A pop piece. I think every woman should have a staple that she can throw on for a little color or to make a statement. For me, it's my Dolores Tank from Acne. It's a simple violet colored tank dress, but it always stands out amongst my normally black/grey look. I wear it alone, under jackets or tucked into skirts. Sometimes I just wear it under a t-shirt with leggings.

Bekah's 10 Basics
1) J Brand skinnies. No branding, no tag, just classic denim. I've never found a better pair.
2) Black leggings. My favorites are SoLow and YaYa. Investing in a higher quality pair is key, so they don't lose their shape after the millionth wearing.
3) Oversized cardigans. Living in sub-zero temperatures puts a damper on my uniform of tanks so layering is important. Currently in heavy rotation are my Marc, Rebecca Taylor and Vince.
4) Chuck Taylors.
5) Flat riding boots in brown and black. My disdain for heels make these a must and they tone down my obsessive love for the scandalously short. My favorites are the Loeffler Randall Matilde boot (in snakeskin and plain) and Frye Paiges.
6) Gold necklace. A lifetime of begging my mother for her cursive 'B' necklace, a gift from her mother, finally wore her down and she gave it to me for Christmas this year. I never take it off.
7) Bop Basics. I live in the super soft raglan crews and burnout tees.
8) Loose, fluid tanks. I have about 15 black variations.
9) Aviators.

10) A perfectly worn in hoodie. As an avid member of the religion of brunch, speed is key when dressing Sunday mornings. I throw on a cozy sweatshirt (hood up) and sunglasses and I'm out the door.

Notes On: Dressing for the Kill

Someone who has always walked a fine line between being an admirable mentor and ruining my life once instructed me to add deer hunting as an interest on my resume. Whether he really thought it would be an interesting talking point for an interview or was hoping that I would humiliate myself, I'll never know. Either way, hunting is definitely not an interest of mine. Sportsmanlike style, however, has always seemed to peak my interest. Not surprisingly, the first and only time I accompanied my dad on a deer-hunting trip, I was far more concerned with my outfit than the game. Choosing to forego the traditional orange attire, I wore my matching neon pink jacket and snow pants and carried an equally bright "handbag" filled with a thermos of hot cocoa, a rubix cube and a box of Girl Scout cookies. (editor's note: I was in the fourth grade.) Neon colors and Thin Mints aside, I've found traditional English hunting clothes quite inspiring lately. The vests at Rag&Bone and Boy by Band of Outsiders for Fall 2010 are incredible layering pieces, and who doesn't love plaid? Day and evening. It’s a cross body bag – good for shopping so I don’t need to carry anything and I can focus all my arm strength on the mission at hand and good for evening so I can easily grab drinks at the bar for myself and friends without worrying about my handbag.

The usual watering holes...Natt Spil and Maduro or out for a day of shopping.

I wish I could say somewhere exotic or far away, but since this is a relatively new bag and I haven’t gone on a “real” vacation since owning it, the bag has been to Chicago, NY, Philly and Park City

How many other bags are currently in your rotation?
I have 2 younger sisters so whenever I get a new bag I typically pass an old bag down to them, so I don’t have too many bags in rotation. But currently I'm using a Marc by Marc Jacobs messenger bag (really into cross body bags lately since they are so easy to use), Halston Heritage Night Bag (another cross body- this one is good for evening) and a Gucci Bamboo Bag – great for more formal events. I got it when I was 21 studying abroad in Italy and plan to have it forever.

What’s your dream bag?
A Chanel Handbag. Unfortunately I have really expensive taste so I may be eying this forever (unless my husband, hint hint, decides to get it for me one day). I really want either the classic large flap or the classic flap bag with black leather and gold hardware. I wish I wasn’t so materialistic or label driven, but alas, I am who I am.

What’s the one piece of clothing you can’t live without?
Lululemon pants. They're great for working out or just bumming around.

Deep Thoughts: Hanging Outfits

Many ill-fated nights begin between these walls.

Inspired by a good friend's musings on first date outfits (and okay, a little miffed I wasn't consulted to weigh in on the subject) I set about conducting a serious scientific survey of my own, appeased by said friend's promises that when she writes her 'what to wear to make out in an alley' post, I'll be her first call.

Since I adhere to a strict anti-dating regime, many of my hang-outs happen spontaneously so I don't have the benefit of knowing when I'll run into friends who also happen to be boys. This week, however, I found myself in unfamiliar territory, panicked and stressed, not only because I had committed to an actual time and place but because all I really knew about the boy I was meeting was his seriously stylish aesthetics quite possibly surpassed my own. A text from my fashion advisor/life coach reassured me that showing up in anything other than my usual sartorial masterpieces would feel wrong, so I settled on a variation of my daily uniform: boots, dark denim, loose layered tanks, an oversized cardigan and 3 or 4 necklaces.

The responses from friends confirmed that the only thing to remember when selecting "hang out" attire is to wear what you love. I assumed the input from my fashionable circle would lead to the magical culmination of the perfect date ensemble, a veritable 'nothing can possibly go wrong if you wear the following', checklist. But tragically, all but one of the friends surveyed have been off the market for some time and I was forced to make do with what they donned for the first date with their now beaus. Phenomenal and reassuring, their answers solidified that it really doesn't matter what you wear! Or at least it didn't in these cases. Names are omitted to protect the fashionable.

"Bop Basics dress with the ACNE Dolores top under it, leggings and boots because it fits really well and it's not too scandalous."

"Well we were both bartenders so either black pants or a skirt and a Pokegama polo or white shirt."

"I don't know, it was super ugly. I think a long white prairie skirt with a brown camisole I got in London. I can't remember which shoes exactly, but they were flat sandals. Gold I think."

Which then brings me to the friend who graciously supplied almost a powerpoint presentation including (but not limited to) a numbered list detailing where and when she purchased all items. Did I mention this date happened in 1995?

"Black ribbed merino turtleneck sweater from Club Monaco, vintage Levi's bellbottoms, de rigueur chunky black boots, an ill-fitting vintage velvet peacoat from Cheap Jacks and a Prada knockoff black nylon bag from French Connection."

Obviously, we're desperately in need of a brush up on date dressing, so please help us! What are your go-to pieces?

Kleenex, phone, reporter’s notebook, digital camera, pouch full of lipglosses, giraffe-print pouch full of other essentials (Band-Aids, Bath & Body Works sanitizing hand gel, eye drops, etc) wallet, sunglasses, hand lotion, purse clip, iPod Shuffle, receipts (um, I shop a lot), coupons (I shop a lot), snack bar, business cards, gum, Listerine pocketpack strips and a mac and cheese recipe from the Old Fashioned (run last year in Madison Magazine, no less) that I’m dying to make. I’m actually quite organized and don’t like to carry around a lot of unnecessary things!

How much does it weigh?
No idea, maybe around 7 pounds? Ugh, that’s a lot. And to think I could fit even more in that bag...

The credit card can BUY the most stuff, but probably the digital camera. The least expensive is the 99 cent Suave hand lotion.

I have a greeting card I’m giving someone that I’m holding on to! I also have business cards from contacts that were given to me at various events.

Biggest thing ever in your bag?
I have this creepy cat umbrella I got at a rummage sale for $1. It even has this weird wooden handle in the shape of a cat face. So, I’ve stuffed it in the bag before.

When do you carry it?
Pretty much all of the time–though I’ll sometimes switch it up with a smaller clutch for night, like my favorite magenta one I bought from Atticus! I don’t like to lug around a large bag at night. It’s all about matching the outfit at that point.

Favorite spots in Madison to take it?
Shopping, out to dinner, the movies, the Comedy Club, anywhere I’ll be hanging out with friends.

Favorite places to shop for a bag in Madison?
Anywhere that’s locally owned—although mine is from Aldo—I couldn’t let it go once I spotted it; I had to have it because of the color! Locally, dependable handbag shops include: Patricia Shoppe, Dazzle, The Purple Goose, bop and Atticus.

Where would you never take it?
Sporting events like a UW football game or Brewer game, it’s too bulky and gets in the way—I guess it being seven pounds doesn’t help!

Oddest thing ever in the bag?
I don’t think this is odd but the people who haven’t seen it do: the purse clip I have unfolds and attaches to the edge of a table so you can hang your bag there! It’s fantastic—I highly recommend it. Another wacky thing: a photo on my camera of myself and Jamie Foxx. I met him this summer at his concert—I have a friend who knows him!

Farthest the bag has traveled with you?
Minneapolis, Minn., or Hayward, Wis.—that’s waaaaay up north (five hours)—I haven’t been on any trips since purchasing this bag since I just got it in October.

What do you wish you’d find in it?
Free money. A vacation gift certificate. Or, a gift certificate to any of the fine local retailers I write about all of the time! So fun.

How many other bags are currently in your rotation?
For work I have a brown patent shoulder bag by Loeffler Randall for Target. I love it. For nighttime I’ll carry a clutch. I have many iterations: snakeskin, a magenta one from Atticus, gold pyramid-studded, silver, black patent with a bow, Anya Hindmarch for Target nude and gold, a Coach wristlet, brown and red quilted patent, and I just bought a teal satin ruched one that goes perfectly with a teal necklace I own.

What’s your dream bag or the one you’re eyeing next?
I was reading InStyle the other night and spotted an Urban Expressions studded gray shoulder bag that I LOVE (it comes in turquoise too…beautiful). If money were no object I covet Marc Jacobs royal blue studded “Stam” handbag or any number of handbags from shopbop.com.

What’s the one piece of clothing you can’t live without?
You’re asking the wrong person: everything I have in my wardrobe has a purpose...but, I guess I’ll say for winter my skinny jeans because they go with everything including flats, heels and boots and for summer cute, floaty sundresses are my thing. They’re low maintenance. For accessories I can’t live without gold jewelry, including my gold boyfriend watch and gold hoops that I wear every day.

I'm forgoing my usual deep thoughts for the week to pay homage to one of fashion's true talents. Alexander McQueen's death will leave a gaping hole in an industry starved for exactly his brand of outlandish genius. Especially now, when many designers are forced to choose between bottom lines or artistic vision, he never concerned himself with playing it safe. He was a rule breaker, but also the kind of man who, when asked in an interview with his mother, answered that love makes his heart skip a beat.

His innovative imagination and seemingly limitless talent churned out brilliant, truly astounding collections season after season. His moving, controversial, fantastical interpretations of modern aesthetics were what fashion is really about. Loved or hated, the designs were deeply emotional and brought even the most jaded back to that visceral gut feeling reminding us why we fell in love with this industry in the first place. Viewing his collections, suddenly we were all 8 years old again, staring wide-eyed, minds racing with an aching desire and passion that no matter how many words spilled, could never be articulated.

Editor of British Vogue, Alexandra Shulman sums it up,

"at one level he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashion shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern-day genius whose gothic aesthetic was adopted by women the world over. His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn't."

He will be missed.

With the start of NY Fashion Week hours away, I'm finding it increasingly hard to concentrate. In lieu of sneaking an adderall from one of my ~~fortunate~~ prescription-holding friends, I've been staying sane by focusing on Stockholm Fashion Week.

Stealing the show, as usual, is Jonny Johannson's cult line Acne. The FW10 alien inspired collection mixes metal ankle braces, unitards and spray-painted foreheads with down-to-earth details like zippers, fringed scarves and shearling boots. I'm quickly becoming obsessed with the tough leather details and body con mini dresses. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. We can't forget that there are the milder spring months to enjoy first and just as lighthearted, the current Acne collection that will be arriving in a few weeks.

Exuding much more of a bohemian and earthy feel, Acne SS10 features dusty hues of pink, beige and mauve. Breezy tanks and flowing dresses create a mystical mood that exists throughout the collection. My favorites include the tie-dyed pieces and the soft spring knits. Perfect organic-feeling pieces to wear on Earth before Acne transports us to another world.

Before and much, much after

As much as I adore dolling up for black-tie events, I also can't wait for that moment at the end of the night when I haphazardly discard my outfit in a pile on the floor, pull on comfy clothes and curl up in a Wild sister's bed. This past weekend we attended an adult version of prom, a charity ball held in our little state's capitol. Dance party mayhem and screaming renditions of Bon Jovi and Journey songs left me far from my A-game come morning, but a night in Kiki's new Keep Me pants seemed magically to hold my aching feet (and head) at bay.

For most, downtime is so scarce we're willing to toss on any old ratty tee inherited from past amours. But lounge wear, with its ability to sooth and comfort, is truly worthy of its own category on the shopping list. If you're anything like me and your basics extend outside the house, say to work or to brunch the next day, it's best if they can pull double duty. A few of my favorites:

There is something refreshing about the simple life, and I'm not referring to heiresses sleeping in a pink Airstream. Instead, I'm thinking more along the lines of current menswear trends. The demand for selvedge denim and a resurgence of classic rugged brands like Pendleton and Woolrich indicate that, these days, dudes want well-made gear that will defy both trends and time.

The idea of quality goods is not a new one for Billykirk design duo and brothers Chris and Kirk Bray. Their line offers leather goods designed with much practicality and minimal extras. The Justification: Last Minute Ideas

This past Saturday marked the 24th annual DMI Frostiball. As a last minute attendee, I pulled together the perfect look to represent Atticus, all the while being taped and spanxed into my dress (I swear that sample size was smaller than normal!). Charlotte Ronson came through as always with my (Kristin's, whatever) beloved One Shoulder Dress. While squeezing into the dress on Saturday afternoon, it occurred to me that maybe I should just purchase the correct size for myself. Sure, Kristin and I basically share a closet, but that may not last forever and I covet this dress. My wise older sister steered me in the direction of top stick and unflattering undergarments that would get me through the night and save me the money of buying another dress. So, since I decided against the purchase there are now enough of these beauties on the rack for me to justify to you. And hopefully you don't have a "wiser" sister who will be there to talk you out of such purchases!

Justification #1: The one shoulder is the perfect accent on the dress and will save you money because you won't need to buy a lot of jewelry to go with it!

Justification #2: This dress is 100% silk and less than $200! It might possibly be the best full priced deal you'll ever see!

Justification #3: The subtle pattern on the dress helps to disguise any spills that might occur in the night. For example, when a glass of champagne gets out of control during a Wild sister dance party.

Overflowing with a veritable menagerie of glosses, polishes and powders galore, you'd expect nothing less from the handbag of Co Leigh Co salon owner, Nicole Moser. Everyone should be so lucky to have a Nicole in their life, magically transforming the hair and makeup of her friends with a few expert strokes. I've witnessed her ability to style not one but 5 girls, not to mention herself, before heading out for a night of debauchery. And although she may scold me for fussing with her beautiful creations after the fact, it's only because she really does know better!

Deep Thoughts: Dealbreakers

My imaginary dream man's closet.

A recent Jezebel post about fashion dealbreakers got me thinking about my own. Obviously, my make or break list for potential suitors is nearly infinite, but I tend towards forgiving if at least a minor interest in fashion is apparent. I once saw a boy's closet more organized than my own, overflowing with shoes all in their original packaging and nearly took my pants off on the spot. (Editor's note: Don't worry mom, I totally didn't!)

In any case, most straight(ish) guys I know aren't as strict with fashion don'ts as women are with other women. If the girl's good-looking, they're not cringing uncontrollably at the sight of her frayed Sevens and black boots like I am. But certainly, I'm not the only one wanting to slap some sense into mall outfit offenders, "going-out" clothing wearers and anyone, anywhere with counterfeit bling. After informally asking my gentlemanly friends what they considered dealbreakers, the following answers were suitable to print:

"Nothing, it's impossible to turn me off. Okay, well jeans with no back pockets."
"Fat people in skinny fashion."
"It comes down to shoes, that's my gauge for style. Too many girls rock the ugliest shoes."

Truer wisdom has never been spoken, but I'd love to hear what YOU think. How do you avoid breaking the deal? What are your dealbreakers?

It's usually a safe bet that any look deemed 'effortless' is anything but. Take for instance that perfectly destroyed Balmain t-shirt gracing the pages of every known fashion issue (see Daria at left). After a wasted hour of going at, and completely ruining, my favorite Marc by Marc tee with a scissors and cheese grater, I can tell you that this particularly disheveled look is far from effortless. And unless you've been blessed with a mane like our model, Rachel, that breezy Wang braid is nearly impossible.

Lately, my schedule has been so packed with travel, fall market, dinner parties, fundraisers, meetings, photo shoots, collaborations and a rather intense remodeling project, I haven't even had time to tweet. Clearly that leaves zero time for creating inventive, or even interesting, looks from the emerging piles of clothing lying on my floor. In order to survive the rest of this daunting winter, I need a few go-to looks that really actually require only tiny amounts of effort.

Here are the pieces I consider to be relatively effortless and are currently being worn in heavy rotation:

ACNE Blackout Dress: So easy to put on over tights. I put a belt with it for meetings.

Charlotte Ronson High Waisted Shorts: I swear they really are effortless. They're enough of a show piece themselves, so tights and any top complete the outfit. I like to tuck in a white t-shirt if I'm going out, but they also look cute dressed up with an embellished tank.

Filippa K Long Slip Tank: It's long enough to wear alone with tights. So, I have them in a variety of colors. I always wear one over tights, and then just throw any cardigan, sweater, or jacket over it to complete the look.

Kerrigan Richard Jacket: I steal this out of my sister's closet to dress up my favorite t-shirts or to make my tank dresses wearable in the winter.

Temperley London Honeycomb Sweater: This is my all time favorite piece. I own it in 3 different lengths and colors.

Back from our 48 hour whirlwind trip to New York, Kiki and I are inspired and positively elated with what we saw. We took in trade shows, fawned over a stunningly gorgeous women's collection and met with the designers of, in my understated opinion, the greatest new denim line on earth. We're not naming names, but we promise you'll be nothing short of amazed.

Our packed appointment schedule left little room for sleep and the see thru shower in our beautiful Thompson Hotel made for interesting brunch conversation, but as soon as we shook hands with rag & bone designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, the $200 we (well Kristin) blew on cab fare was instantly forgotten.

Back home, we're logging crazy hours planning amazing collaborations, heavenly photo shoots and so, so much more! We're practically bursting with excitement to dish, but we're keeping it under wraps for now, so check back soon. It'll be worth the wait.

The Justification: Bag Decisions

So it occurred to me the other day that I should purchase a new bag. I have the big totes and the small-ish everyday bag that I cram everything into. But with school starting again, I'd love to have something that can double as a school bag and an everyday bag without being too big.

Coincidentally, Atticus sells such a bag in the form of the Brant bag by Ashley Watson! Now I only have to decide which bag to purchase, so I'm justifying my final two choices. I know you're just as excited as I am.

Marc then and now

I discovered a letter I wrote to myself in 1993 while sorting through the piles of junk I've accumulated over the years in my Mom's basement. After slogging through nearly two pages compiling the boys I liked in excruciating detail, I came across this sentence, "I still don't really dress the way I want to, but who knows if I ever will?" Even at 12 I understood the yearning to transform and the seemingly magical powers fashion plays as a catalyst. Coincidentally, I've been reminiscent of the early 90's as of late because I'm uncharacteristically feeling a grunge moment.

It was a time of epic changes on the fashion front, 1992 was the year Marc got sacked from Perry Ellis for showing his revolutionary, now cult collection. Repurposing looks the cool kids were already rocking and presenting them to the cardigan sweater set certainly isn't ground-breaking now, but back then it was an unholy union, one even Jacobs himself described as "a little fucked-up." Layers upon layers of thermals, florals, flannels and big down vests topped off with the obligatory cozy knit hat created an uproar, women weren't sure how to respond to a $1200 dress that looked plucked from vintage store anonymity.

Fortunately we all know this story has a happy ending, and I'll be thanking Marc as I'm dusting off my old Docs and piling on a jumble of harmonious textures and prints. Maybe it's a desire to placate the girl in me who never dressed this way the first time around or maybe the overwhelming runway resurgence of this sartorial gem finally seeped onto my radar. Either way, I've discovered the revealing part about looking back is how often it then propels you forward.

Editor's Note: Yes, I realize this is late, but since my New Year's Day was spent shouting at Kristin from her bed (she was on her living room floor), watching Teen Witch and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and trying to keep my head from exploding all over Hilary Duff's poignant acting skills, I figured it's still applicable. Enjoy!

New Year's Eve, with its seemingly endless possibilities, has always been my favorite holiday. I’m drawn to the romantic idealism of a night where anything can happen and come morning, everyone's slate is wiped clean. Most people say they never keep resolutions, so they've long stopped making them, and although I tend to fall into this camp, I still relish choosing them every year. There are the ones that should be no-brainers (hypothetically speaking of course): don’t make out with someone’s boyfriend or stop having my paycheck direct deposited into the local drinking establishment below my apartment. Then there are the ones I actually want to keep, resolutions to inspire and bring hope that the coming year will be better than the last. This year I’m focusing on three things.

Appreciate Beauty: Not to get all Zen and one with the universe, but I think engrossing myself in the world outside my head will be a powerfully welcome change. Instead of continuing to overlook the delightful randomness of each day, I want to revel in the genuine, happiness-inducing moments. My extremely talented friends: photographers, artists, writers, chefs and designers, each chip away at their own masterpieces everyday. Whether it’s savoring home-made frittatas on Sunday mornings, recording monumentally obscure inside jokes to be used as fodder for my great American novel (“It all comes from the same place anyways”), admiring the craftsmanship of incredible denim or just supporting my favorite starving artists by keeping their shot glasses full, this resolution won’t be difficult.

Work Harder: Consuming more than just coffee and a half a pack of Parliament Lights before 5 p.m. on a daily basis would be a good start. And yes, the amount I’m able to accomplish considering my embarassingly minimal effort is astounding, but double or triple that and I’ll be on my way to where I actually want to go.

Punctuality: This was not a resolution I made, but instead one made for me by my extraordinarily patient boss. I better take it seriously.

Fortunately for you, this post is not about last Thursday's antics which resulted in getting so wasted that certain members of my social group called in sick to work, fell asleep on the job or in one particular case, someone was asked to go home early. After enduring my rather abrupt wake-up call (what can I say? I can't handle snoring) a friend recently confessed that, upon waking, he initially mistook my room for a hospital. Although my style could be described as extreme minimalism, having it likened to an asylum isn't exactly a dream come true.

I've always loved the look of bare white walls, I find it an incredibly soothing contrast to life's daily stress. It's also extremely easy, a no-brainer, in terms of design. I approach my wardrobe with the same fervor, except in lieu of white, I stick with fiercely minimalist, always in style, black. Prying my bony little fingers from their vice grip on my ink J Brands and 15 variations of the same black tank, however painful it may be, is a necessary foray into the unknown. Especially after boring myself skimming previous posts, realizing I constantly write about this exact dilemma. After finally hanging girly pink pictures in my bedroom, perhaps it's time to follow suit with my wardrobe.

Here's how I'll be injecting a much needed dose of warmth to my closet:

A bright alternative to my basic black tank.

Justification #1: This tee is my number one obsession. Seriously-I bought if to give as a present (you're welcome, Rooms) and then I also had to buy one for myself.

Justification #2: It occurred to me while writing this that there are some especially lovely Facebook pictures of me from an impromptu night out. There's nothing like having a million pictures taken of you when it looks like you just crawled out of bed. But at least you sort of get to see how amazing this tee is!

My dear friend, Jessica, is tying the knot in a couple weeks. A wedding is always cause for much thought and overanalysis of what to wear, and the date of this particular fete is making my decision that much more difficult. Notes On: Gratitude

I recently came across an old journal entry from Thanksgiving 2006, when I lived in New York. The entry was an attempt at pulling myself out of the cynical mood that I had become accustomed to after countless walks to work in the rain, overdrawing my bank account for taxi money and living on a random girl's couch for two months. I listed all the things that I was thankful for, and I realized how fortunate I was to live in the greatest city in the world. It's been three years since I wrote that entry, and although I can no longer include Shake Shack, Pixie Market and sample sales among my current roster of things to be thankful for, I still think that life is pretty flipping fantastic.

What Kristin is Thankful for in 2009:

My family and the Wild Homestead

My friends- both those I don't see very often and those who I bbm with 3429875 times a day

My Atticus crew for their inspiration, creativity and work ethic (even when they only get paid in pizza and alcohol)

My Aude Michelle Scarf for basically being my security blanket through the long Wisconsin winter

Bradbury's and Kickapoo Coffee for getting me through the day. Every day.

The fact that I have a career that allows me to live in Madison and travel to NYC on a regular basis

Current/Elliott, Acne and T by Alex Wang for designing my current go to staples and Temperley and Rag&Bone for giving me a reason to look forward to the normally dismal month of February

Deep Thoughts: Giving Thanks

The last time I gave a compliment, it got laughed off. Apparently, the downside to being a sarcastic ass most of the time is even when actually telling the truth, people don't believe me. It's easy to get caught up in the monotonous day-to-day and dwell in the negative, but when my genuine expression of niceness got scoffed at, I realized perhaps focusing on the positive couldn't hurt. With the impending holiday reminding everyone to give thanks, I found myself inspired and downright cheerful when thinking about all the good in my life. Mostly ridiculous, with a dash of serious, I've compiled a list of what I'm thankful for this year:

My family: both biological and the one I've assembled on my own. It's been a helluva year and I'm beyond lucky to find myself surrounded by creative, inspiring, amazing people.

Atticus (and it's owner, my darling Kiki) : my home away from home, even if I'm not allowed to lay on the couch when people come in to shop.

Blackberry Messenger: Drewser and I would perish without it.

Black leggings: I'd never leave the house if I had to wear actual pants.

Whiskey: even if it makes me habitually tardy and causes my boss to crack jokes about untreated alcoholism.

Alexander Wang, Vena Cava, Rodarte and Gary Graham: designers who still push boundaries, explore new territory and make me remember why I love fashion.

My standing Sunday afternoon dates: brunch, yardwork, pumpkin smashing, hopscotch, skateboarding injuries, terrible movies, the list could go on. Everything is better with my partner in crime.

Deep Thoughts: Yes We Can!

I sat cross-legged on a bench chugging water in London's East End and rudely asked the man to repeat himself.

"I said, you look just like a pixie," he said.

I brushed it off at the time, probably because like the ungrateful, barbaric American that I am, I spent my summer abroad at 17, not absorbing the rich cultural sights and experiences, but finding the nearest pub and staking out for 12 or so hours at a time. For some reason, although I can't even picture this man's face, his words came back to me this week. While I'm quite certain I didn't look like one then, I'm positive I'd never be mistaken for one now. Their impish, ethereal air is as far from my usual uniform as possible, but right now I'm finding florals, layering, down home and homespun irresistibly endearing. Fantasies of frolicking in prairies and living in an anthropologie catalog are calling my name.

Chalk it up to the change of seasons or the alarming fact that it's now suicide level dark at 4 pm, but after struggling for some time to find original and inspirational clothing, a swing in the complete opposite direction may lift my spirits. I can never completely abandon my influx of beloved black but I'm giddy with excitement over the delicate, feminine darlings I've spent far too long ignoring.
